Highlights in the life of Washington
1732 – Born in Virginia on February 22
1745 – Formal education ends at age 15. He did not attend college but read and studied on his own throughout his lifetime.
1752 – Inherits Mount Vernon; Receives commission as Major in the Virginia militia at age 21.
1758 – As peace returns to Virginia, Washington resigns his commission to return farming at Mount Vernon.
1759 – Marries Martha Dandridge Custis
1774 – Chosen one of Virginia’s representatives to the Continental Congress
1775 – Congress commissions Washington to command the Continental Army besieging the British in Boston.
1776 – Washington’s troops cross the Delaware on Christmas night and defeat the British garrison at Trenton
1781 – British troops defeated at Yorktown, Virginia. Washington accepts Cornwallis’ unconditional surrender and wins the Revolutionary War.
1783 – Washington resigns his commission, retiring again to Mount Vernon
1787 – Attends Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia; Unanimously chosen to preside over the Convention.
1789 – Unanimously elected first President of the United States
1793 – Second term as President
1797 – Resigns as President, refusing to seek a third term.
1799 – Dies December 14 at age 67
