Resource & Homeschool Curriculum Reviews

By Grace Alone - Book Review

Having heard, and loved, several messages by Dr. Sinclair Ferguson, I was eager to review his latest book By Grace Alone, published by Reformation Trust. The publisher emailed me a e-book version of the book and offered to send me a free copy of the physical book in exchange for a published review, which I am only too happy to give.

The book's motivation is an African hymn published in 1946 "Umbuntu Bg Imana" translated "O How the Grace of God Amazes Me". Several facets of the grace of God in Jesus Christ are depicted in the song. Each chapter in the book focuses on one aspect of grace with studies, meditations, reflections, and praise for the marvelous grace of God. The bondage of sin, the love of God that calls and restores, the cross of Christ, the righteousness of believers in Christ, protection from Satan, rest in God's sovereignty, and freedom to live a holy life for Christ....

Change and Motion: Calculus Made Clear 2nd Edition

DVD lectures from The Teaching Company. A wonderful "layman's" explanation of calculus. If you understand basic y=nx type functions, you can learn from this. One of the best.

Teaching Company - Understanding Music

Lectures on CD or DVD from The Teaching Company. Understand and appreciate music history and fundamentals.

Einstein's Relativity and the Quantum Revolution: Modern Physics for Non-Scientists

DVD lectures from The Teaching Company. Layman's explanation of modern science discoveries.

Physics The Easy Way

Physics seems formidable to many, but this book does truly make it much easier to understand. "Easy" is relative, but this is the best book I've found for high school homeschoolers. It has plenty of real math problems so it's not a dumbed down "story" of physics. Rather, it takes you slowly from easy concepts to more advanced... [More]

Bob Jones Geography

We used the Geography course from Bob Jones in 9th and 10th grade. Each chapter is divided into several sections. There are "Section Review" questions that reinforce the section material. I like the "Geographer's Corner" feature in most chapters. This is an additional exercise in reading maps with charts, so essential these days with so much media being visual and graphic...

Introductory Logic - DVD/Textbook course

This program of video classroom lessons combined with the student textbook and answer key is complete introduction to "formal" logic study.  It is essential that students are introduced to the formal principles of reasoning in the middle or early-high school years.  Though Logic is not created but is discovered, and is therefore intuitive in some sense, it is critical that students learn that the truth and validity of statements can be determined analytically.

Thinking Toolbox

Another great book by the Bluedorn brothers.  This book, though not a sequel to Fallacy Detective, should be studied after Fallacy Detective, and preferably after a more formal introductory logic program.  Each of the 35 lessons can be done in a single sitting.

Exploring Creation with General Science

Exploring Creation with General Science from Apologia is well suited for grades 7-9.   We cover each module in a set of 5 to 7 lessons, each lesson suitable for about a half-hour of a typical school day.

Vision Forum: Witherspoon School of Law and Public Policy

While not a lawyer or politician, since I have learned much from Vision Forum's various conferences, I was curious about the Witherspoon conference. I am glad to say these messages are timely and important for professionals and laymen alike. While some specific law cases are mentioned, by and large, these are foundational teachings on how to think and live biblically. These will necessarily affect how we work, educate, and vote. While lawyers may be able to make a more direct impact on public policy, we all need to understand the issues if we are to live faithfully in the complex and bewildering 21st century world....

A Word in Season

A Word in Season is a language arts instruction curriculum for K-12. The keystone of this curriculum is a four-year high school program that provides an orderly approach to developing language arts skills by integrating western history, literature, and writing.

Learner.org Free Online Courses/Video

Learner.org offers many online classes programs and lectures suitable for high-school homeschoolers. I've enjoyed The Art of the Western World. This is a PBS style documentary with vivid detail that is a joy to watch. The program is not produced from a biblical viewpoint so parents should watch it with their children and discuss the various interpretations offered by the program.

Another great help to parents is learner.org's The Mechanical Universe. This complete introduction to high-school and college physics will interest student and parent alike. It's not a rigorous classroom lecture, but another PBS style documentary. Just enough math is provided to motivate the student to dig deeper and interact with the concepts and equations found in traditional "textbook" physics. Study Notes and coordinated textbooks are available for purchase on the site. We haven't seen these personally.

Take advantage of these Arts and Science programs, as well as the dozens of others offered at learner.org.

Quarter Mile Math

A wonderful tool for drilling basic math facts. Covers simple counting up through fractions and percent. An inviting, easy to use program in which the student "races" against others to complete the various simple problems. The "others" are their own earlier best times, or those of other players. Our kids enjoy this and learn simple math facts with a fun game they can play for hours.

A simple game with out all the advanced graphics and soundtracks of advanced computer games...

Robinson Curriculum

Some of our methods are inspired by the Robinson Curriculum (RC), though we do not use RC directly. RC is a set of CD's containing the complete pages of various older books and classics. The books are in the public domain so are not copyrighted. The CD's contain photocopies of all the books which you read directly from the computer or print at home. A complete K-12 education is provided as the books span all the way from first grade primers up through college level classics...

Fallacy Detective

This is a perfect introduction into "Logic" study - the very idea of which seems daunting to many parents.  The Bluedorns have a friendly, humourous, yet rigorous and complete way of gently starting your emerging young adult along the road of formal thinking.  Economical, effective, and fun.  A true "must-have" for any middle school education.
